April 5: My sweet chicken

What we’ve learned: How do our hearts not explode?! We have learned so so much about our ability to love more than we thought possible. We also are learning patience! This is something we are working on every day. She's such a good baby, but her fussy periods are definitely trying. It's hard not knowing what she needs or wants, and makes us feel terrible.

What we’re enjoying right now: Every. Single. Day. Every snuggle, every nursing session, every smile.

What our biggest struggles are: breastfeeding! E is growing like a weed and seems to nurse easily, but we've discovered she has a lip and tongue tie which is causing a lot of nipple damage for me. She only nurses 5-10 minutes on one side at each nursing session, luckily, or I'd be a lot worse off. As of right now the ties aren't affecting her, but it will once my milk supply regulates (I have an oversupply) and drops off a little, she will struggle to nurse because she will have to work harder. She's also at risk for pretty severe gapped teeth and speech impediments in the future. Hopefully we will see improvement after we have the issues corrected this month. The ties might also be at least partially to blame for her gas and reflux issues, which are pretty heartbreaking. In addition to all that, she also fights sleep during the day, which can be frustrating. She just prefers napping in my arms, so I generally get nothing accomplished during the day. I'm taking advantage of these snuggle days though, I know they won't last forever!

What has been Evie's most exciting milestone: her smiling is AMAZING!

What we’re looking forward to: physically, getting her lip/tongue tie issues addressed so we can hopefully see improvement on all fronts there. Other than that, I love seeing what every day brings!

Other Milestones: Evie holds her head up for long periods and looks around, and has been doing that consistently since about 1-2 weeks. She started smiling intentionally at 3 weeks, and hearts broke across the world :)

Sleep: we do pretty well most nights, because she falls right back to sleep after nursing. Occasionally we have a rough night, where she wakes up after her first bout of sleep and it takes a couple hours to get back to sleep. Daytime is harder, but we are starting to figure out some options. She didn't like the swing at first, but now we are figuring out that a pseudo swaddle works and lets her relax for a while. The next step is trying out her crib for naps to help the future night switch a little easier.

Best Moment: her birth and our time at home with Luke were my own favorites.

Worst Moment: any of the inconsolable crying fits. She breaks our heart.

Health: Shes such a healthy girl! No real issues other than the lip and tongue tie, which isn't affecting her too much yet.
Chunky!

Eating: she's starting to stretch her feeding time from 2 hrs to 2.5-3hrs. She is averaging a weight gain of 3/4 of a pound a week at our breastfeeding group weigh-ins. She transfers about 2-3 oz per feeding at this point.  Her only issues with feeding are the spitting up constantly and vomiting when she has too much gas or overeats. We are also not seeing much reflux improvement.

Other Highlights:
- Evie LOVES her bath time and loves laying on her changing table!
- She lost her umbilical cord stump at one week during her newborn pictures - good timing!
- Her lowest weight was 6 lbs at 2 days
- Breastfeeding group at the Mamahood has been our saving grace. It helps getting out of the house and we seem to have a new question each week.
